Veseyans RFC 14

After last week's victory over Leek, the Veseyans travelled to Old Yardleians with a spring in their step, which turned out to be needed as the Vs had to dig deep to bring about a second half comeback.

Things started well for the Vs as it was the dependable right boot of Dan Poulton that opened the scoring for the visitors with a nicely slotted penalty kick.

This sparked the Vs into action and they started to play some flowing rugby, but it was the aggressive might of the home side pack which began to grind the Streetly men down.

A well executed line-out and subsequent forwards rolling which notched up the first score for Old Yards as they crashed over for a deserved try.

Not to be left in the shadows, the Yardelians' backs had their crack of the whip, linking well and galloping in a second try for the hosts, with the conversion added. The home ground was partisan as the first half came to an end with their side leading 12-3.

The second half proved to be a volatile affair, as Poulton knocked over two more penalties to narrow the arrears to only three points and the home side were not pleased as the game could potentially slip away from them.

The hostile hosting crowd made life difficult for the Vs but they stood strong and showed fortitude to stay in the game and not be bullied out of the match.

Finally it was hooker John Symmons who proved to be the tip of the Veseyan spear as he received the ball after great linking between backs and forwards and smashed his way over for a try on his first team debut.

That score gave the Vs a lead the 14-12, but ill discipline in front of posts gifted Old Yards a brace of opportunities to snatch the victory.

But their penalty attempts faltered and the Vs secured the win. Tomorrow the Veseyans host old rivals Tamworth at the Memorial Ground.
