Midlands Three West South

Spartans RFC 16

Droitwich 7

After a disappointing defeat last time out, Spartans returned to winning ways as they turned in an excellent team performance against a strong Droitwich side last weekend.

Under pressure from the start, the away side infringed and gave fly-half Alex Stewart the opportunity to open the scoring, which he did with a well-struck penalty.

The Spartans' front eight continued to force Droitwich into errors and their efforts were rewarded with a further penalty to make the score 6-0.

As the first half progressed it seemed inevitable that Spartans would score the first try with their dominant pack directing operations.

A fine lineout take by Simon Carrington saw Nick Hall link with Michael Foulds who burst through the defence to score a well crafted try conceived on the training ground.

This try capped an excellent performance from Foulds, while his physical presence and strong running was a feature of the game.

Stewart missed the conversion attempt to see Spartans go in at the break 11-0 up.

Spartans started the second half just as they did the first, driving into Droitwich territory and recycling the ball with refreshing efficiency.

Droitwich heads were going down, but they were thrown a lifeline as Spartans conceded a brace of penalties.

Fortunately for Spartans both penalties were missed and the score remained 11-0.

Spartans' second try was the result of a slick move from their ever impressive backs. Michael Blair was found in midfield, he then stylishly glided through despairing Droitwich tackles before chipping over the fullback and gathering the ball himself to score an exhilarating try.

The conversion went wide and Spartans, now led 16-0. With time running out this seemed to be the decisive score, but the away side came back strongly.

A final flourish from Droitwich saw them score a consolation try in the corner, to see the match end 16-7 in favour of Spartans.

This was a gutsy and determined performance from Spartans putting last week's slip up to Berkswell and Balsall very much behind them.

Tomorrow (Saturday) Spartans travel to Kidderminster hoping to capitalise on their much improved performance.
