Theatre mourns dedicated Jean

A 'positive' and 'lively' lady, who dedicated more than 50 years of her life to serving a Sutton theatre, has passed away aged 82.

Jean Draycott first became involved with Highbury Theatre Centre in 1949, working in virtually every department up until her passing on August 31.

"Jean was one of those special 'Always' people, always there – week in year out," said Theatre chairman Steve Bowyer.

In her latter years, Jean served behind the Front of House coffee bar, but was previously on the Board of Trustees.

"Jean just made people feel good around her," added Mr Bowyer.

"She was never still; her energy belying her age, making people tired just watching her."

The stage at the Sheffield Road-based venue was a regular place to spot Jean in plays during her early decades.

She also played a prominent role in keeping it running helping in many ways, including cooking suppers for the audience.

Highbury president Brian Bird knew Jean from childhood.

He said: "She always gave her opinions clearly, in a constructive, positive, encouraging manner, never negative, always with the interests of the theatre at heart.

"I will miss her dreadfully."

Aside from her passionate commitments at the theatre, Jean was also a member of Inner Wheel, several luncheon clubs and a literacy circle.

The longstanding member of the congregation of St Michael's Church, Boldmere, met her late husband Ken at the theatre and assisted him in his dental practice.

"She was always sparkling and cheerful, helpful, understanding and supportive; a lady to rely on," said Ann Aveling, Front of House director.

Jean leaves behind her son Andrew with his wife Maggie, her daughter Catherine with husband Bob and Emily, her grand-daughter.

Funeral arrangements have yet to be confirmed.
