Sutton brothers get BAFTA nomination

Two Sutton siblings are celebrating this week after being nominated for a BAFTA.

Myles and Greg McLeod – better known as The Brothers McLeod – have been nominated for best short animation for their film Codswallop.

"We're really excited about it all really," said Myles, 33.

"It's something we've wanted to achieve for a long time but, to be fair, it's something we didn't think would happen quite so soon."

Codswallop is based on a series of postcards that animator Greg, 37, sent to his son, and features surreal characters at crucial moments during their briefly-glimpsed life.

The voices for the characters were supplied by the brothers and their family – including their 90-year-old grandparents – and the pair also created most of the soundscape, using only a drum kit.

And the brothers have had plenty of support from friends and well-wishers.

"I've had a lot of emails over the last week from friends and people I haven't heard from," Myles said.

"I even heard from an old English teacher of mine who I hadn't seen in 20 years."

Despite the support the film faces some stiff competition. Former BAFTA winners Marc Craste and Nick Park are also nominated for Varmints and A Matter of Loaf and Death respectively.

But Myles said he is not fazed by the competition.

He added: "To be nominated still counts for a great deal. But as long as you're in the running you've got a hope. I'm really looking forward to being in the same room as the likes of 'Brangelina'. It will be a night to remember."

The BAFTAS take place on Sunday, February 8.

Codswallop will be shown as part of the Flatpack Festival in Birmingham from March 11 to 15.
