Poppy appeal all sewn up in Four Oaks
The woollen poppies are proving so popular with customers at Foxhill Crafts at the Mitchell Centre that pins have been clicking night and day to meet the demand.
The total raised so far stands at £1,094 and knitters say they are thrilled with the response.
"My first idea was to ask each knitting group member to do three poppies and sell them to their friends, but just look what has happened!" said sales assistant, Margaret Harrison.
"Someone told me last year about a knitted poppy on the British Legion website, but it was not available until October 2009.
"Obviously that didn't give much time to do anything so I found an alternative pattern and tweaked it so that all the levels of skill at our classes would be able to manage it," she said.
The shop asks for a £3 donation in exchange for a poppy and the proceeds are split equally between the British Legion's Poppy Appeal and the Help For Heroes charity.
Margaret said: "In the main we all have our families around us and we were saddened by the young men killed or badly wounded in Afghanistan.
"Obviously we did not want to detract from the Legion's appeal so decided to split any money made between the two causes."
Most members of the shop's many knitting groups are now on the production line.
The poppies each take 30 minutes to knit and 15 minutes to sew together, a brooch clip is then attached to the back.
"We are currently coping with demand, but I don't think anyone is getting any sleep, eating or going out," said Margaret. "There would be real difficulty in increasing production, but we do intend to keep going, as long as we can."
