Police confirm Four Oaks Post Office robbery

Tuesday, November 18, 2008, 12:34

Two armed men, one of whom wielded a shotgun, struck at Four Oaks Post Office yesterday (Monday), police have confirmed.

Yesterday afternoon, the Observer reported online that Mere Green residents had seen a car burning near flats on Mere Green Road, around 150 yards from the Lichfield Road business. They said they understood from police that it had been used in a robbery at the post office.

Police said today that shortly before 3pm on Monday, two men entered the store armed with a baseball bat and a shotgun. The offenders hit the counter and demanded cash.

They made off empty-handed in a white Ford Escort; a suspected stolen vehicle. It was later found outside flats in nearby Farnborough Court; a residential area off Mere Green Road.

The gun was not discharged and no-one was injured, police said. In February, armed raiders targeted the same premises.

“This was a serious incident with offenders who were armed with very dangerous weapons,” said Detective Constable Brett Stephenson from the robbery team at Sutton police station.

“There were a number of customers and shop assistants in the post office at the time who were very shaken following the ordeal.”

Officers wish to speak to anyone who may have seen the Ford Escort being dumped or driven erratically in the area.

The offenders are both described as white males, around 6ft tall. They wore dark clothing and their faces were covered.

Witnesses or anyone with information should phone the robbery team on 0845 113 5000 or the confidential Crimestoppers service on 0800 555 111.
