Police chief to fight Pussy Cats proposal

Tuesday, November 18, 2008, 09:00

Sutton's chief of police will fight plans to turn Flints Wine Bar into an adult entertainment club on grounds of child protection and prevention of public nuisance.

In a letter to Sutton's MP, chief superintendent Russell Smith warned that children would 'clearly have a view of activity around the doorway of the club'.

He offered his reassurance that an officer from West Midlands Police would be there to formally object to the proposal when it goes before the Licensing Committee at 11am on Wednesday, November 26.

In addition he expressed worry over the club's proximity to neighbouring homes, adding: "I am very concerned that there are four roads within a very short distance of the club and it can be overlooked from some of those dwellings."

Meanwhile Andrew Mitchell MP and Councillor Maureen Cornish have met with Flints' licensee Deirdre O'Rourke to make clear their objections.

Mr Mitchell said: "Many local residents have made clear to me their strong objections to this proposal and Councillor Maureen Cornish, Councillor Anne Underwood and Councillor Peter Howard and I have expressed our deep concern.

"I am very concerned that Mere Green and Sutton Coldfield are wholly inappropriate locations for this activity."

Speaking to the Observer on Wednesday Deirdre O'Rouke said she had no comment to make until the Licensing Committee had made its decision.

Licensing bosses will decide on November 26 whether to grant permission for Flints Wine Bar to become an adult entertainment club. (PJ02442-04065SO)
