Gifted scientists, Kate Lanchester and Winola Chio, both 15, of John Willmott School achieved top grades in their recent science exams to win the trip of a lifetime.
The girls spent 12 days in the US, visiting the Kennedy Space Centre in Florida and NASA Headquarters in Houston, Texas.
"It was brilliant," said Kate.
"We learnt so many different things, it was amazing really."
Winola adds: "We learnt so much we would never have learnt in school.
"We were taken on VIP tours round the Kennedy Space Centre and got to talk to astronauts about what they do and how rockets are put together."
The girls were part of a group of ten Birmingham students from five different schools on the trip.
Kate and Winola also took part in a marine biology survey in Florida, part of an educational programme called 'Save our Seas'.
Financed by Birmingham East Network, the trip was part of a programme run by ISSET – International Space Schools Educational Trust – which promotes students' awareness in science and encourages them to get involved in engineering.
