Helicopters will hunt for Sutton Coldfield hotspots

Wednesday, November 19, 2008, 08:00

Sutton will soon be facing the sound of helicopters over head with the launch of Central Networks hunt for hot spots.

Central Networks has revealed plans this week to inspect the heat levels of electricity substations across the region via helicopters fitted with thermal imaging equipment.

"We're responsible for around 750 primary and grid substations across the Midlands and this is vital work," said Jim O'Sullivan, director of infrastructure services.

"Taking up a helicopter is the best, easiest and fastest way to carry out checks on large sections of the network.

"It helps us spot potential problems before they develop and that means we can do any necessary work before it begins to cause problems," he added.

The thermal images will highlight any major problems and determine where the engineers need to prioritise repair work.

Helicopter patrols are set to begin across the West Midlands from December 8-31 dependant on weather conditions.
