Chief fire officer arrested amid child images allegation

Sutton Coldfield father Frank Sheehan, chief fire officer for West Midlands Fire Service, has resigned from the post today (Wednesday) after being arrested on suspicion of making indecent images of children.

Mr Sheehan, aged 55, was arrested and bailed yesterday.

Police say a 55-year-old man was arrested on Tuesday in the Sutton Coldfield area.

West Midlands Fire Service said the arrest was a police matter and as such, could not comment.

Sutton Coldfield constituency chairman, Councillor Peter Howard, is chairman Of West Midlands Fire And Rescue Authority. He said: "Frank Sheehan has resigned from his post, for personal reasons, as Chief Fire Officer for West Midlands Fire Service with immediate effect.

"The Deputy Chief Fire Officer, Vij Randeniya, will be acting in the role of Chief Fire Officer.

"The Fire Authority has every confidence in the Corporate Board and the staff of West Midlands Fire Service who will continue to serve the communities of the West Midlands."

Mr Sheehan was awarded a CBE in June this year for services to local government. He joined the service in 1975 and rose to the rank of CFO in August 2003.
