Book reveals roots of Scottish streets

IN REPLY to David Roy's letter in the Observer June 26, all the answers to his Scottish link road names in Boldmere are to be found in Kerry Osbourne's recent book, 'The Street Names of Sutton Coldfield', obtainable from Sadler House in High Street.

The roads concerned were laid out in the 1930s by the Somerville Estate, the trustees being Sir Theophilus George Biddulph, who lived in Roxburghshire, Scotland, and his Blackett cousins who lived in Northumberland.

Having named some of the roads after their own houses, they used their local links for the rest – Darnick, Carnwath, Denholm, Dalkeith and Falstone. The roads were laid out for developers to buy plots.
