Nurses 'sorry' after Sutton man's death

Friday, January 22, 2010, 10:34

TWO nurses involved in a drugs blunder which led to the death of a Sutton man will not be punished because they have said sorry.

Vongai Gondo and Catherine Kunatsa made up a lethal dose of the drug amphotericin, wrongly prescribed to cancer patient Paul Richards at Heartlands Hospital two years ago.

But they were told this week by the Nursing and Midwifery Council they had 'no case to answer' because of the remorse they had shown for their mistake and the results of competency tests they had undertaken.

Mr Richards's widow Lisa Richards-Everton said: "I find it absolutely appalling.

"I am devastated, it is almost like losing Paul all over again.

"For two-and-a-half years I have hung onto the fact that one day I will get a little bit of justice for what happened.

"But where is the justice in this?"

Lisa has been campaigning for tighter regulations on the administration of such powerful drugs in the hope of preventing future tragedies.

She will meet health minister Ann Keen on Tuesday to raise awareness of the issue.
