A crash on the M6 caused long delays.
Two cars had collided on the southbound carriageway during rush hour.
West Midlands Ambulance Service sent a rapid response car to the scene shortly after 8am.
A spokesman said: "The driver of one of the cars, a man in his 30s, was cut free from his vehicle by fire crews under the supervision of ambulance personnel.
"He had a suspected spinal injury and was immobilised with the use of a spinal board and neck collar before being taken to Sandwell Hospital for further assessment and treatment."
The driver of the second car involved in the incident was a woman in her 30s and she refused further treatment.
