'Golden opportunity' for Great Barr road
Booths Lane in Great Barr, which has seen its road surface deteriorate significantly due to years of neglect and the recent spell of bad weather, will now be repaired by Birmingham City Council, with a bill sent to The Host Corporation, the firm which owns the land.
The business is presently in administration, but continues to trade.
Bob Wild, vice-chairman of the Booths Farm Neighbourhood Forum, who has campaigned for action to be taken on the road for many years, said: "This is very, very welcome from our perspective. But it is certainly not before time.
"I am still a little concerned about when the job will be done. And will it be filling in holes which won't last, or a complete resurfacing job?
"At the forum we feel this is a golden opportunity for the city council to take the bull by the horns and bring the road up to adopted standards."
Oscott councillor Keith Linnecor, who has backed the Booths Farm residents' campaign, said he hopes work is carried out quickly. He said: "I think it needs to be a matter of absolute urgency.
"It should have been done a long time ago. Since Christmas it has got out of all proportion, and as traffic is diverted there if there is an accident along Queslett Road, I hope repairs are carried out soon."
A spokesperson for Birmingham City Council said: "In usual circumstances the council would not repair the road or any other private road, but due to the serious effects of the weather we are considering emergency repairs on the west stretch of the road.
"We will be charging the costs to the owners of the private road."
