Sisters tune in and dream of a new life

BITTERSWEET masterpiece Dancing at Lughnasa will be brought to life on Birmingham REP's main stage from this week.

Written by acclaimed Irish playwright Brian Friel, Dancing At Lughnasa, is a heart-warming and poignant reflection on life in rural Ireland in the 1930s.

It's summer, 1936. In a house in a remote part of County Donegal, the five Mundy sisters live a simple life with their older brother Jack, a missionary priest, and seven-year old Michael.

Barely able to make ends meet, the sisters acquire their first wireless radio and dream of happiness and love.

Years later, as Michael looks back at the events of that summer, a tender and passionate portrait of the Mundy sisters' lives unfolds.

This nostalgic tale features a talented ensemble cast including Barry Ward as Michael, Peter Gowen as Father Jack and Penny Layden as the formidable eldest Mundy sister, Kate.

Premiered in 1990, the play has previously been produced in the West End and on Broadway, winning an Olivier Award and three Tony Awards. It was brought to life on the big screen in 1998 in a successful film adaptation starring Meryl Streep.

Dancing At Lughnasa is directed by Tamara Harvey, with lighting design by James Farncombe, and sound design by Matt Mackenzie. Design is by Colin Richmond and choreography by Nick Winston, who both recently worked on The REP's hugely successful production of A Christmas Carol.

Dancing At Lughnasa will be staged at the REP from Friday, February 19 to Saturday, March 6.

Tickets are £12 to £32 – limited £10 preview tickets and concessions available.
